This extremely demanding yet very successful rescue operation took in total more than 50 hours until the Slovenian seaman arrived at the hospital in Portugal. They saved the lives of two badly injured crew members, including a Slovenian. They were flown from Gabreski Air National Guard Base at Westhampton Beach to the scene of the accident in a four-engine Hercules rescue aircraft, then parachuted in the dark into the rough sea, navigated their inflatable boat to the Tamar, where the fire had been already put out, and rendered medical assistance to all the injured crewmen.
